Magnesium is an essential mineral that accounts for about 0.05% of the body's total weight. Nearly 70% of the body's supply is located in the bones together with calcium and phosphorus, while 30% is found in cellular fluids and some soft tissue.

Magnesium in involved in many essential metabolic processes, including the energy production of glucose, protein and nucleic acid synthesis, muscle impulse transmission, vascular tone, electrical stability of the cells and neurotransmission and activity. Most is found inside the cell, where it activates enzymes necessary for the metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids. By countering the stimulative effect of calcium, magnesium plays an important role in neuromuscular contractions. It also helps regulate the acid-alkaline balance in the body.

Magnesium helps promote absorption and metabolism of other minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium and potassium. It also help utilize the B complex and vitamins C and E in the body. It aids during bone growth and is necessary for proper functioning of the muscles, including those of the heart.

Magnesium deficiency can easily occur because magnesium is refined out of many foods during processing. Cooking food removes the minerals; the oxalic acid in foods like spinach and phytic acid in grains bind magnesium in the body, as do unbalanced amounts of salts.

Magnesium deficiency can occur diabetics, those who use diuretics or digitalis preparations, the elderly, those with pancreatitis, chronic alcoholism, kwashiorkor, pregnancy, cirrhosis of the liver, arteriosclerosis or kidney malfunction, those on low-calorie or high-carbohydrate diets, and those who have severe malabsorption such as that caused by chronic diarrhea or vomiting. Some hormones when used as drugs can upset metabolism and cause local deficiencies. Fluoride, high zinc levels, high levels of Vitamin D will also cause a deficiency or magnesium.

Symptoms of a deficiency may include gastrointestinal disorders, irregular heart rhythm, and lack of coordination, muscle twitch, tremors, weakness, apprehensiveness, personality changes, disorientation, confusion, depression and irritability. A deficiency interferes with nerve and impulses. Long term deficiency can lead to tetany as in a calcium deficiency, alcoholic hallucinations, unusual face and eye movement, alopecia (baldness), swollen gums, and lesions of the gums.
