What are super green foods and why do I need them?
Super green foods are derived from young cereal grasses such as wheat,
barley, rye, oats and alfalfa, as well as spirulina, chlorella, kelp,
dulse and other sea vegetables. Perhaps the most nutrient-dense foods
on earth, these grasses are richer in nutrients than spinach, broccoli,
eggs and chicken in virtually all categories including protein,
calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, zinc, copper,
manganese, vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folic
acid, vitamin B12, carotenoids and vitamin E.
Super green foods are the only foods in the vegetable kingdom that
enable animals to continually maintain their weight, strength and
optimal health even if consumed alone. They abound in unidentified
growth factors, powerful antioxidants, immune boosters and many other
health enhancing nutrients.
What are the effects of not eating enough vegetables and greens?
Surprisingly, malnutrition can occur even if your body is only
deficient in a single vitamin. Malnutrition means you're not getting
enough nutrients as a result of an inadequate or unbalanced diet or
because of digestive or absorption difficulties. Symptoms of
malnutrition include lack of energy, irritability, a weakened immune
system leading to frequent colds or allergies, and mineral depletion
that can trigger a variety of health concerns including anemia.
If I'm already taking a vitamin supplement, why do I need Perfect Food?
supplements?
The whole foods found in Perfect Food provide vitamins and minerals as
nature intended, with all the naturally occurring co-factors and
synergistic compounds intact. They contain hundreds, and possibly
thousands, of nutrients that cannot be isolated and put into a vitamin
and mineral supplement.
Whole foods and their concentrates contain complete nutritional
complexes the body recognizes and assimilates according to what it
needs--a process called "selective absorption." In contrast, most
vitamin and mineral supplements are made from fractionated, isolated or
synthetic sources that can potentially create an environment of
biochemical imbalances and toxicities.
For optimal health, there's nothing better or more compatible to the
human body than nutrient-rich, unprocessed whole foods in their
balanced, natural state, like those found in Perfect Food.

Green Superfood Supplements: Cereal Grasses
Nearly every major health organization recommends eating five to nine
servings of fruit and vegetables per day to maintain health. Yet,
according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, less than nine percent
of American adults consume the recommended number of servings.
Green foods, commonly termed “super
foods” due to
their high nutritional content and tremendous amount of phytonutrients,
consist of micro-algae, cereal grasses, land plants, green vegetables,
and seaweed. One of the greatest food substances for cleansing
elimination systems such as the bowel, as well as, the liver and blood
is chlorophyll, which is found in all green vegetables, especially the
green, leafy vegetables. The two most commonly used green foods are
cereal grasses and micro-algae.
Cereal grass has been around for thousands of years, and although human
consumption of cereal grasses has increased dramatically in the last
few decades, most people don’t have any idea what cereal
grass really is, and, are unclear as to what role cereal grasses play
in a healthy diet. In fact, many people may even be suspicious of
anything labeled with the word “grass” as a
commodity for human consumption. However, bottled, dehydrated, cereal
grass has been a food supplement for people in the United States since
the early 1930’s.
In order to explain cereal grasses, let’s start with wheat
grass. Wheat grass is, as the name suggests, the young grass stage of
the wheat plant. Given soil, air, sunshine, and water, and left to its
own devices, wheat grass grows into wheat, the familiar amber waves of
grain. In its youth, wheat is a very dark green, leafy plant. Another
cereal grass is barley grass, the young grass stage of the barley
plant. Other cereal grasses include rye grass and oat grass. All young
cereal grasses look, smell, feel, taste, and, most importantly (from a
nutrition standpoint), have the nutrient and chemical makeup of green
leafy vegetables rather than of cereal grains.
Nutritionally, cereal grass is similar to a number of other dark green
vegetables, and when the cereal plant is young, it looks something like
familiar lawn and field grasses. It is leafy and has a deep green
color. For more than seventy years, researchers have known that the
cereal plant at this young green stage contains many times the level of
vitamins, minerals, and proteins found in the seed kernel, or grain
product of the mature cereal plant.
All Cereal Grasses are Nutritionally Identical
The taste of young cereal grass leaves varies slightly with the species
of cereal plant, from quite sweet (rye grass) to slightly bitter
(barley grass), but the nutrient content of these grasses varies only
with their stage of growth and growing conditions, rather than with the
species of cereal grains.
The young germinated cereal grass plant is a factory of enzyme and
growth activity. Photosynthesis in the young green leaves produces
simple sugars which are transformed into proteins, carbohydrates, and
fats by the actions of numerous enzymes and substrates which were
themselves produced from the plant sugars and minerals provided by the
soil.
The nutrients found in young green cereal plants vary with the stage of
growth, rather than with the age or height of the plant. Chlorophyll,
protein, and most of the vitamins found in cereal grasses reach their
peak concentrations in the period just prior to the jointing stage of
the green plant. The jointing stage is that point at which the
internodal tissue in the grass leaf begins to elongate, forming a stem.
Cereal grasses of the wheat or barley plant that are consumed as food
supplements should be harvested precisely during this stage, which
lasts for only a few days.
Grass Juice Powder vs. Whole Leaf Powders
Whole leaf powders are made by taking the cereal grass and dehydrating
it. The dehydrated cereal grass is then ground into a fine powder; a
quick and inexpensive process. Grass juice powders are made by taking
the cereal grasses and juicing them. The juice is then allowed to dry
into a fine powder, retaining the benefits of the juice itself; a time
intensive and more expensive alternative to simply grinding up a whole
leaf powder.
Garden of Life believes that juicing cereal grasses in its green
superfood supplements provides more nutritional benefit. When cereal
grass is juiced, as opposed to dried and ground up, the resulting juice
is packed with most of the nutrients available in the grass. Once this
juice is low temperature dried, the resulting powder is much more
densely packed with water soluble nutrients such as B-vitamins and
folic acid than the same amount of whole leaf powder. Additionally,
juicing the cereal grasses allows for quicker and easier assimilation
of nutrients by the body.
Spirulina, chlorella, and dunaliella (red algae) are micro-algae. These
aquatic “super foods” provide many of the nutrients
the body needs. Chlorella contains an enormous amount of readily
available chlorophyll, protein, carbohydrates, most of the B vitamins,
Vitamins C and E, amino acids, and additional rare trace minerals.
Green juices contain cholorphyll, enzymes, iron, magnesium,
phosphorous, potassium, and sodium, as well as, provitamin A, B-complex
vitamins, and Vitamins C, E, and K. One of the great advantages of
cholorphyll-rich juices is their cleansing effect on the bowel and
other elimination systems. It’s no wonder chlorophyll has
been called a “natural deodorizer.” A clean body is
an efficient body; a body that digests well, assimilates well, and is
full of energy and vigor.
